Manta Season is coming!
By the end of July the Mantas season will be in full swing on the East side of North Male Atoll. Some fairly regular sightings have been happening already and these early signs indicate that we may have a good season this year. The Manta ray season runs from the end of July until the Beginning of November with the months in between usually showing the best numbers. The sightings happen at a variety of dive sites which can be accessed from both of our diving centres respectively. If you’ve never dived with Mata rays before then be sure not to miss out! It’s a truly magical experience to hover alongside these giant and yet amazingly graceful animals as they glide effortlessly through the water.

Meet the team
Guiding diving and teaching people how to dive isn't just about spending time underwater. In fact you'll spend more time on average above water hanging out with the team as you prepare your gear or relax between dives. Inevitably you'll get to know all the other people in your class and on the boat as well as your dive guides and dive instructors. To give you a head start we would like to introduce the Maafushi Dive team to you right here beginning with our members of staff and then some honorable mentions of our current batch of divemasters in training (Yes guys we appreciate you too!)

Dive Centre - Child page -
Welcome to Maafushi Dive Dive Center. We are a professional scuba diving operation run by highly qualified and motivated members of staff. Our training facility on Maafushi is well suited to teaching diving and has a comfortable classroom space, plenty of room for wet storage and a modern compressor system.
Teaching experience has shown us that outfitting students with safe and reliable equipment gives them confidence, enhances their learning experience and increases their chance of success. Needless to say using only good quality and above all, safe, equipment is a key factor in delivering safer diving experiences. All of our scuba equipment is in good condition. From our cylinders and regulators to our BCDs, wetsuits and fins, everything is in perfect working order.
Overall, Maafushi Dive’s operational capacity is sufficient to cater up to as many as 40 divers.
Maafushi Dive firmly believes that safety should always take the highest priority and we apply this fundamental principle throughout our work flow to minimize risk and to maximize enjoyment.
At the heart of our operation Maafushi Dive uses only Bauer compressors to provide reliably pure and safe compressed air for scuba diving. Our facility in Hulhumale is the only dive center within the greater Male´ area to hold a “Bauer PureAir Station” certification. Read more about this in our Bauer Pure Air subsection.
Despite the best precautions you should always be well prepared for any situation. All diving activities conducted by us are fully supported by emergency oxygen units as well as other essential first aid supplies. Our staff members are EFR (emergency first response) certified and trained in the use of emergency equipment and protocols.
Should anyone like to visit our facility on Hulhumale to personally inspect our equipment and meet our staff then they are more than welcome to do so.
We are open daily from 8am till 6pm.

This area of our website aims to provide you with comprehensive information on the diving options that Maafushi Dive has to offer as well as some useful insights into diving and traveling the Maldives in general. Explore the following subsections to discover more.
Diving Schedule & Rates
Maafushi Dive offers daily diving and at our facilities. This section gives you a complete overview of our activities schedule and our rates for diving.. In all cases our rates include the use of any rental equipment you may need. We operate a flat rate with no extra charges or hidden costs. You pay what is advertised and not a dime more.
Dive Sites When you’re deciding to travel somewhere it is customary to first flick through a myriad of brochures to get an idea of what you can expect to see. Most locations are reliably detailed down to the last beachside bar but with scuba diving it’s not so simple. That is precisely why we are developing this section of our website to give you a more realistic insight into the dive sites we visit on a regular basis. Browse through our site descriptions and supporting imagery to see for yourself what the underwater scenery has to offer.
Local diving regulations Scuba diving in the Maldives is regulated by a code of practice under the Maldives Tourism Act. If you are going to be engaging in diving activities during your vacation then a number of these regulations are very relevant to you especially with regard to maximum depth limits and no fly times. For your convenience we have summarized the most pertinent parts of the act so please take the time to read this section and inform yourself of these diving regulations.
Local people and culture Get more from your Maldives visit than merely the cliché postcard impression of white sandy beaches, tiffany blue water and palm trees. It’s a minimum courtesy and a sign of respect to acknowledge the local customs whenever you travel in a foreign country. In this section of the website we pay homage to the local way of life from its quaint fishing village backwaters to the fast paced rhythm of the Maldives, beat out on a traditional “bodu beru” drum.
A brief history of the Maldives The Maldives archipelago has often been described as a Jewel of the Indian Ocean but how were the Maldives formed? What is an Atoll? Where does all the sand come from? These and other frequently asked questions are raised here as well as a look into how scuba diving got started in this very remote and exotic destination.

Diving practices in the Maldives are strictly regulated under the Maldives Tourism Act. Please review the local diving regulations section of our website to quickly familiarize yourself with the most relevant information.
Diving options for non certified divers
For non-certified divers we run a PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program. This program permits someone who has never dived before to try out scuba diving under the direct supervision of a PADI instructor. The DSD session includes a brief theoretical introduction to diving safety and equipment as well as a skill practice session in shallow water after which the participant actually goes on a real scuba dive.
The cost of the DSD program is 75 US$ per person
These programs run in conjunction with our afternoon diving trips. We ask that participants be at the dive centre at 01:30pm to fill out their registration forms, to try on equipment and to participate in the theory segment of the program.
After completing a DSD program and at the discretion of the supervising instructor, DSD participants are eligible to join scheduled boat dives at the standard diving rate of US$ 50 per person per dive. DSDs are not eligible for the progressive diving rates as these only apply to certified divers.
Due to strict participant to instructor ratios, availability of the program is limited to a maximum of 4 people per day.
If you are interested in getting certified then the PADI Open Water Diver Course is the perfect entry level diving qualification. It takes 4 days to complete and includes a full day of classroom theory, a half day of shallow water training exercises and four open water dives spread over the final two days of training.
The cost of the Open Water Diver Certification is 475 US$ per person
This includes all the necessary PADI student materials, equipment rental, boat charges and certification fees.

Local Diving Regulations
----------------------------------------------------------
The standard safe practices of scuba diving are basically the same the world over. For example you should not ascend too quickly, never hold your breath, follow the buddy system, etc, etc. Standard diving practices in the Maldives are much the same with the exception that the Maldives government has taken some rather interesting additional measures to ensure that scuba diving enjoys a 5 star safety record in this diver’s paradise. Popular opinion goes both ways on this but the fact remains that these measures are working to keep diving safe and, more to the point, that they are the law.
So, in a nutshell, here is what you need to know……
Dives less than 24 hours before flying are prohibited.
„ Maldives Recreational Diving Guidelines, Chapter 3, section 4, Paragraph 3”
This pertains to flying in any kind of aircraft be it commercial or non commercial, sea-plane or Boeing 777. Nobody is permitted to engage in any scuba related activity for at least 24 hours before boarding an aircraft. This helps to prevent even the occasional occurrence of decompression problems related to flying and diving. Please be sure to calculate this buffer into your itinerary when planning your diving trip. Dive centres are actually obliged to take note of your departure date and flight number to make sure that you stay in keeping with this law.
The Maximum depth for all‐recreational diving in the Maldives is 30 meters.
„ Maldives Recreational Diving Regulation Chapter 2, section 3, Paragraph 1”
This is the general maximum limit and only really affects divers who hold technical recreational diving qualifications or deep diver specialty qualifications and who specifically wish to engage in deeper dives. Just to be perfectly clear on this matter, the law does not also mean that suddenly everyone may dive to 30m. Let’s not forget that for DSDs, PADI scuba divers and PADI junior divers under the age of 12 years, the 12m depth limit still applies. Open water divers may dive to 18m and advanced open water divers, rescue divers, divemasters and instructors are qualified to dive up 30m. So, on the whole, it is only a very small part of the diving community that is limited by this law. It can be argued that the undeniable improvement of diving safety in the Maldives since implementation of this law was worth the sacrifice.
Only no decompression diving is allowed in the Maldives.
„ Maldives Recreational Diving Regulation Chapter 2, section 4, Paragraph 1”
Even though most dive computers these days will calculate a “deco” dive for you, the Maldives is simply the wrong place to try out that function on your shiny new dive computer. Here amongst the atolls decompression diving is strictly prohibited by law. This is the main reason why technical diving and technical diving training has never found a real foothold in these waters. In any case technical diving is a highly specialist activity and should not be taken lightly or engaged in without substantial training and additional equipment. The Maldives offers you plenty of amazing diving sites accessible well within recreational no-stop diving limits. With diving innovations such as Enriched Air Nitrox allowing us even more time underwater without exceeding safe limits, there is little real need to push the envelope anyway.
No gloves are to be worn on dives
This law was introduced not to protect scuba divers but to protect the coral reef. It goes without saying that wearing gloves will protect your hands from cuts scrapes and the cold but it does not protect the reef from you. In a bid to prevent divers hanging on to live corals with abandon, this law was implemented in the hope that divers would be less inclined to hold onto the reef with their bare hands. It’s not quite certain if this strategy has in fact worked or whether the mere fear of getting injured is enough of a deterrent? We hope though that as an environmentally conscious scuba diver you will try your best to minimize harmful contact with the reef wherever possible. The diving ethos of “Take only memories and leave only bubbles” comes to mind.
These are only some of the diving regulations that all divers must abide by when diving in the Maldives. For a full description of diving regulations and guidelines please download a copy of the Maldives Tourism Act from the Maldives Tourism website.

Discover Scuba Diving
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? To feel as close to weightless as possible here on earth whilst being surrounded by hundreds of tropical fish? In the Maldives this opportunity is literally right on your doorstep. Through the PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience program our instructors can take you on a guided underwater tour of a Maldives coral reef today.
You don’t need to have a diving license or any kind of formal training either. The program will lead you through everything you need to know to be able to safely participate in a guided reef dive.
If you’re someone who loves to be in the water then this is definitely one of the most amazing activities that you can enjoy in this divers paradise. The whole program takes about 3 hours and by the end of it you’ll feel like you’ve done something totally worthwhile with your day.
What’s involved?
- The formal bit - Once we’ve welcomed you at the dive centre we’ll ask you to fill in a Discover Scuba Diving registration form and try on some diving gear for proper fit. Thereafter your instructor will give you a briefing on how to dive safely as well as explain to you how your equipment works and what sort of skill you’ll be learning underwater.
- Things start to get better - Soon we’ll be leaving the classroom behind us and heading out by boat to a shallow sandy area of the lagoon. Here in very shallow water we’ll help you to master a few basic skills that everyone participating in scuba diving should be comfortable with. Please try to focus on what your instructor is trying to show you and don’t be too distracted by all the fish!
- This is what you’ve been looking for – Finally, after a short trip by boat to a nearby reef, you and your instructor enter the water to enjoy a real dive in the Maldives. It takes a few moments to get familiar with your surroundings but once you’ve settle into a comfortable diving pattern you really start to appreciate how amazing the underwater world is! Relax, breathe deeply and slowly and enjoy the ride. You’ll be surprised how fast the time flies by as you’re “flying underwater”.
Who can participate?
- The minimum age for participants is 10 years. Participants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or legal guardian who should be with the underage participant to sign the form. There is no maximum age.
- Participants should be in good health. A part of the program paperwork includes a medical statement by which you self asses your fitness for diving. Individuals who are suffering from allergies or colds might experience difficulty in participating on the dive portion of the experience. If in doubt, please refer to a copy of the medical statement which can be found here and/or consult your physician.
- Please be advised that there is a 24 Hour no diving before flying policy in effect in the Maldives. It’s better to schedule any diving related activities early on in your travel plans to avoid conflict with this local law. We would hate to turn you away simply because you are flying the next day.
Where and When?
- We meet daily at 1:30 pm at the dive centre to begin the formal part of the experience. Please don’t be late. We will wait for 10 minutes for late guests and then we will begin without them. You can find our location on Google maps by visiting the” Location” page in the “Contact Us” section of our website as well as directions on how to get here. We look forward to welcoming you at our dive centre.
How Much?
- The cost of our Discover Scuba Diving program is 75 US$ per person. This is a fixed rate and remains constant regardless of who you book through. Please DO NOT pay more than our published rates! Thank you.
Got the bug?
- Quite often people who try out scuba diving through the Discover Scuba Diving program also discover that they would like to become a certified diver. Fantastic! If you’ve already done a DSD with us then we’ll discount the cost of your DSD experience from the Open Water Diver course price. If you’ve done a DSD somewhere else with another dive operator within the last 12 months then we’re happy to offer you a 50 US$ discount on the Open Water Diver Course. You’ll need to show us proof of having done the DSD, either on-line or by presenting us with your DSD participant certificate.

Open Water Diver
Also known as “getting your PADI”, the Open Water Diver Certification unlocks the door to a huge variety of diving related adventures and travel opportunities. Once you get certified you’ll never consider another vacation destination without at least wondering whether there is any good diving to be had there. The Open water Diver license is a lifetime certification accredited by PADI and is accepted worldwide by other dive operators as proof of your diving training. It is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle.
Doing your Open Water Diver Course in the Maldives certainly has distinct benefits. The water here is a balmy 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year and you never have to go far to find a decent reef full of colourful marine life Because of this convenience it won't take all day to do your training dives so your afternoons will generally be free to explore other interests and activities or to merely relax.
Although it is a performance based course and subject to individual ability, experience has taught us that the Open Water Diver course takes four days to complete comfortably.
What’s involved?
- Day 1 – On your first day we cover the course paperwork and get into the theory of scuba diving. You’ll receive your course manuals and logbook as well as watch the PADI Open Water Diver video which has now been seen by millions of divers around the world. We’ll also help you through some knowledge review questions and quiz you on how much you’ve understood. This theory session usually takes a full day to complete. Alternatively you can save yourself this precious time during your vacation by completing the theory portion online. See our footnote on eLearning below or visit our eLearning page for a full description.
- Day 2 - It’s time to get wet! After a briefing, conducted by your instructor to familiarize you with the skills you’ll be learning, we take you to a shallow area of the lagoon to put these skills into practice. Underwater your instructor will demonstrate a variety of diving essential skills that every diver must know in order to dive confidently and safely. After watching your instructor’s demonstration you will be given the opportunity to practice these skills yourself until you can master them confidently.
- Day 3 – We leave the confines of the lagoon behind us to find deeper water around one of the beautiful reefs in the Maldives. Amidst the abundant fish and coral life you get to practice your newfound skills on an actual scuba dive led by your instructor. On this day we complete the first two open water training dives of your course. Since you’re training in the Maldives where good diving is close at hand, this doesn’t usually take all day. After diving you’ll still have plenty of time to relax in the afternoon, update your facebook profile picture and tweet to all your friends about the exciting things you’re doing!
- Day 4 – On your final day we take you out on two more open water dives to complete the remaining course requirements. By now you’re well aware of what you’re doing and able to feel more relaxed and confident underwater. You’ll be briefly amazed just how much sense all that talk about buoyancy actually makes and then you’ll simply forget the theory as the schools of pretty fish grab your attention instead. After your last dive you’ll not only have done something very cool with your holiday but you’ll also have earned your Open Water Diving license. Congratulations!
Who Can Participate?
- The minimum age for participants is 10 years. We will only allow participants who are under 12 years of age to enrol in the course once they have satisfactorily completed a Discover Scuba Diving experience and at the sole discretion of their supervising instructor. Participants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or legal guardian who should be with the underage participant to sign the various course forms. Participants younger than 15 years of age will receive a PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification after satisfactorily completing the course. There is no maximum age limit.
- Participants should be in good health. A part of the program paperwork includes a medical statement by which you self asses your fitness for diving. Individuals who are suffering from allergies or colds might experience difficulty in participating on the dive portions of the course. This could lead to not completing the course so if in doubt please consult your physician. Take a copy of the diver’s medical statement with you which you can download here.
- Participants should be confident in the water and be able to swim. We always recommend that you learn how to swim first before trying to learn how to dive.
- Please be advised that there is a 24 Hour no diving before flying policy in effect in the Maldives. It’s better to schedule any diving related activities early on in your travel plans to avoid conflict with this local law. We would hate to turn you away simply because you are flying the next day.
Get a head start!
- You’re on vacation and this time is more valuable to you than a month of overtime remuneration? Then avoid spending a full day of it in the classroom listening to us lecture you (Day 1). We highly recommend that participants complete the theory online through the PADI eLearning portal. You can do all of the knowledge development for the Open Water Diver Course from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a laptop or PC, a comfortable chair and an endless supply of coffee. For more information on eLearning read our eLearning section of the website.
- You can even go one step further and also complete all of the shallow water training (Day 2) in your home country before coming to the Maldives. Go to a dive centre near you, let them know that you’ve done the theory online (you’ll need to print out your eReport as proof) and that you would like to do only the confined water training part of the course with them. They will probably teach you in a very nice swimming pool and afterward you’ll receive a course referral form detailing all of the training that they have done with you. Please make sure that you receive this form and that it is signed and dated by your instructor and stamped with the official dive centre seal. Then bring it with you to the Maldives and enjoy finishing your open water dives in this amazing diver’s paradise.
How Much?
- The cost of the PADI Open Water Diver Course is 475 US$ per person. If you have completed the eLearning option then we will give you a 50 US$ discount on the course rate. If you have completed the eLearning and the shallow water training then we will offer you a 100 US$ discount on our published rate. These are fixed rates and remain constant regardless of who you book through. Please DO NOT pay more than our published rates! Thank you.

If you are already open Water Certified then you can earn the Adventure Diver rating in as little as 1 day although you might like to spread it over 2 days.
What’s involved?
- Course outline – First off you’ll receive an Adventures in Diving participant manual and then discuss with your diving instructor which three Adventure Dives you would like to participate in. For each elected dive there is a corresponding section in the participant manual that you’ll read and some knowledge review questions that you need to answer. Your instructor will review these answers with you as well as brief you on each dive before you go underwater. Then you’re diving again! Each time with a different objective but overall to help you broaden your understanding of the aquatic world and sharpen your diving skills. Afterwards you’ll log your dives while your instructor debriefs you on how the dive went and discusses with you what you have experienced underwater. It’s really that simple but also challenging and a lot of fun.

Advanced Open Water Diver
The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to log more dives while continuing to learn under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. It’s designed so you can go straight into it after the PADI Open Water Diver course so you don’t have to be “advanced” to get involved. This course builds on what you’ve learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun scuba diving. You’ll hone your skills by completing five adventure dives two of which are mandatory and three others that you can choose from a variety of options .
Mandatory Dives
- Deep Dive
- Underwater Navigation
Elective Dive Options
- Night Diving
- Wreck Diving
- Underwater Digital Photography
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Drift Diving
- Underwater Naturalist
For a full description on each of these diving activities please refer to our Specialty Courses section which explains each of them in more detail.
If you are already open Water Certified then you can earn the Advanced Open Water Diver rating within 2 days.
What’s involved?
- Day 1 – You’ll receive your Adventures in Diving participant manual and then discuss with your diving instructor exactly which Adventure Dives you would like to participate in. For each course dive there is a corresponding section in the participant manual that you’ll read and some knowledge review questions that you need to answer. Your instructor will review these answers with you as well as brief you on each dive before you go underwater. Then you’re diving again! We generally aim to do two dives on the first day and you might well find yourself diving on the Maldives Victory shipwreck or drifting through a channel at a rate of knots!
- Day 2 – By this stage most of the theory should be finished and we’re looking at completing the remaining three course dives. Generally we begin with the Adventure Deep dive which takes you down to 30m/100ft. Each successive dive will be shallower than the previous dive usually culminating in the navigation dive conducted on the bottom of the lagoon. During each training day you’ll log your dives while your instructor debriefs you on how the dives went and discusses with you what you have experienced underwater. Each of the course dives introduces you to a new aspect scuba diving but overall they help you to broaden your understanding of the aquatic world and sharpen your diving skills.

Rescue Diver - Child page – Sub page -
The PADI rescue diver course introduces you to various diving related emergencies and encourages you to apply solution thinking to these situations in order to handle them. The training covers basic life support and first aid, how to recognize potentially hazardous situations, ways to prevent or control them and how to respond effectively to diver emergencies. You’ll learn a whole variety of new skills and techniques and practice using emergency rescue equipment and protocols to manage a diving accident situation. It’s an intense course but also exciting and a lot of fun, especially if you’re part of a group going through the training together. Most people who have been through this experience have cited the PADI rescue diver course as being one of the most worthwhile pursuits in scuba diving.
The PADI Rescue Diver course is a 4 day program during which we build systematically on the skills you already know and prepare you for a final scenario day during which it’s up to you to demonstrate how well you can apply your training to simulated emergency situations.
What’s involved?
- Day 1 – The rescue Diver course goes hand in surgical glove with basic life support training such as CPR and shock management etc. You also parctice secondary care skills such as bandaging and splinting. On your first day you’ll learn all of these fundamental skills by participating in an Emergency First Response course (EFR) which in itself is a certifiable program. The program follows the same emergency first aid protocols used by emergency medical services so you’ll get to know how to asses a victims lifeline and provide them with the essential care that they need. For more detailed information about the EFR course visit the “First Aid Course” section of our website.
- Day 2 – We’re back in the classroom this time to watch the Rescue diver video and to go over the knowledge reviews from your participant manual. We’ll also be discussing diving accident management and how to respond to specifically diving related emergencies. You and your classmates will be working together to come up with an emergency action plan, specific to the local area environment, which you’ll be needing as a reference in the latter stages of the course. You’ll also get to grips with industry standard emergency equipment such as oxygen units, first aid kits, in water rescue breathing aids and emergency flotation aids.
- Day 3 – Armed with all of this excellent knowledge we head outdoors to put it into practice. The session begins with a self help review covering some of the basic skills that you learned during your open water course such as cramp release and how to react to an out of air situation. Thereafter we get into the meaty bit of the training, simulating tired and panicked diver rescues, dealing with aquatic life injuries and how to respond to a situation from a variety of different vantage points. One of the toughest skills you learn is how to deal with an unresponsive or unconscious diver, transporting them to safety whilst providing them with rescue breaths. It’s challenging for sure but don’t forget that we’re not looking for perfection just your best effort. We’ll be there to guide you through it and it helps to remember that there’s never only one right way to perform a rescue.
- Day 4 – From here onwards it’s up to you to apply your training to some simulated emergency scenarios. What happens exactly is a closely guarded secret save to say that you’ll need to keep your wits about you and work closely as a team. The scenarios are meant to prompt you to take action according to the accident management skills that you’ve learned and practiced. It’s a day of fun and excitement but also an opportunity to reflect on how you might really react if the need should arise. By the end of it you’ll have the deep satisfaction of knowing that you’ve achieved something extraordinary!
Who can participate?

- Participants must either be PADI Adventure Diver certified or Advanced Open Water Diver certified or carry an equivalent certification from another accredited diving organization or agency. Adventure Divers who wish to do the course must also have participated in the Underwater navigation adventure dive to be eligible to join.
- Participants should be in good health. A part of the program paperwork includes a medical statement by which you self asses your fitness for diving. Master Scuba Diver
The PADI Master Scuba Diving certification is the highest non-professional diver rating issued by PADI. It distinguishes the barer as being highly trained and experienced in a wide range of specialist diving activities and courses. For sure it’s more than just another diving license! It takes time, commitment and dedication to scuba diving in order to achieve this rating and as such it is a testament to your clear passion for the underwater world.
To earn your Master Scuba Diver rating you don’t participate in a singular course but rather a collection of diving courses and experiences. Probably you’ll be completing the various certification requirements over more than one diving vacation or, if you’re based here in the Maldives, then over several weekends. Of course if you have the time and you can commit to finishing whatever you need to get certified then we’re happy to help you achieve your goal. Exactly how long that might take depends on the diving certifications you currently hold and how many logged dives you already have.
What’s Involved
To become certified as a PADI Master Scuba Diver you need to:
- Be at least 12 years old.*
- Hold a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Certification
- Hold a PADI Rescue Diver certification
- Have completed at least 5 PADI Specialty Diver certifications**
- Have logged at least 50 dives.
* Divers between 12 and 14 years of age can earn the Junior Master Scuba Diver rating.
** Find out more about specialty courses and which options are available to you in our Specialty Courses section of the website.
Divemaster
There are many good reasons for wanting to become a PADI divemaster.... Perhaps you’re interested in a carreer change? or you’re a marine biologist and it compliments your line of work? Maybe you’re just looking for that next fun challenge in life or you’re on a gap year and in search of some cool and worthwhile way to spend your free time? Whatever the reason for you, you can also be sure that the course is serious fun, a bit competitive, character building stuff not to be taken lightly either. Above all though it represents itself, throughout the diving world and with good cause, as being the most remarkable journey for any one aspiring to become a diving professional.
What is it?
Divemaster is the first professional diving rating in PADI and your foot in the door to finding employment in the scuba diving industry. Working closely with a PADI Instructor, you expand your dive knowledge and hone your skills to the professional level. PADI Divemaster training develops your leadership abilities, qualifying you to supervise dive activities and assist instructors with student divers. It teaches you these dive leadership skills through classroom lectures and independent study as well as training exercises that stretch your ability to organize diving logistics and to solve problems. Since one of your future roles as a Divemaster is to function as an instructional assistant, a large part of the course focuses on helping other student divers to learn and improve their scuba diving skills. You acquire this knowledge through a structured internship program during which you actually work with our dive operation and under our supervision, helping us to teach diving courses in order to gain the first hand experience that you need.
Divemaster is also the prerequisite certification for both the PADI Assistant Instructor and PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor certifications. If your dream is to become a diving instructor and to work all over the world in one of the most rewarding professions then the Divemaster course prepares you for that next big step!
Who can participate?
In order to begin your Divemaster training you must be
- 18 years old
- Certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver
- Able to present proof of 40 logged scuba dives
- EFR Primary and Secondary Care trained within 24 months
- Medically evaluated and cleared for diving by a physician within 12 months
How long does it take?
Mostly that depends on you and your commitment to the program. Whilst the course is very structured, there are certain elements that require self study and personal discipline. It goes without saying that you’ll only get out of the course what you’re prepared to put in and for our part we can only certify you once you’ve met all of the course requirements.
Secondly, because the course necessitates that you actively assist us on various diving programs, it also has to integrate with our general teaching and diving schedule. This is usually not an issue except in the low season when the frequency of courses in general drops. Realistically, if you are already a certified PADI Rescue Diver, you can expect to complete your Divemaster course within around one Month give or take a week.
Get a Head Start!
Yes, even the Divemaster course theory is now available in eLearning format via the PADI eLearning portal. If you want to save yourself a lot of time in the classroom and spare yourself all the chalk and talk lectures then this is an option that you should seriously consider. Completing the theory online not only saves you time, it also saves your wallet. It can reduce your overall course duration on location which means you won’t be spending so much money to live here. Read more about eLearning and how it works in our eLearning section of the website.
How much?
Provided that you meet all of the above mentioned training prerequisites the cost of the course is 1000 US$.
Specialty Courses
PADI Specialty courses introduce you to a variety of specialist diving activities in which you can also earn a separate diving certification. Each of the courses consists of a number of adventure dives ranging between 2 and 4 depending on the complexity of that particular specialist activity. They involve a certain amount of knowledge development, generally one chapter per dive with each successive chapter and corresponding dive building on the one before.
The adventure dives from the specialty courses program also form an integral part of the PADI Adventure Diver and PADI Advanced Open Water Diver courses. Each adventure dive that you participate in during these courses is synonymous with the adventure dive for the corresponding specialty course. For example if you have logged a night adventure dive during your advanced course then effectively you have also completed dive one of the night diver specialty course. As such you will receive additional credit for having done this training if you choose to complete the remaining course requirements to become certified as a PADI Night Diver Specialist.
Undoubtedly each of the PADI specialty courses are in their own right a worthwhile pursuit. However if you can complete more than 5 specialties as well as achieve your PADI rescue diver rating and have proof of more than 50 logged dives then you become eligible to be certified as a PADI Master Scuba Diver! This is the highest non-professional rating in the PADI continuing education system and awarded only to divers who have proven their diving excellence.
So what Specialty Courses are there?
The following list of descriptions broadly details what is involved in each Specialty course, who may participate, how many dives make up the course, and how much it costs. In all cases where an adventure dive has already been completed through and Advanced certification or similar, a course discount of 50 US$ will be given.
Deep Diver
- Description – In reality it’s very simple to descend even to deep depths, especially in a location like the Maldives where the water is warm and generally very clear. Once you’re down there though you need to be acutely aware of many sometimes hidden concerns and know how to monitor them constantly to ensure your dive remains safe and successful. This course teaches you that heightened level of awareness and what you need to do in the event of accidentally exceeding safe diving limits. In practice, deep diving is considered to be any kind of scuba diving deeper than 18m. On this course we will be taking you down to 30m to conduct the training and perform the skills. Although the Deep Diver Specialty certification officially qualifies you to dive to depths of 40m, local law in the Maldives restricts all diving activities to within a 30m maximum depth limit. Therefore we are obliged to teach this course within the scope of the law and not exceed 30m depth.
- Who may participate – Adventure Divers or higher may participate with the exception of Junior Ratings.
- Number of dives: 4 adventure dives and takes between 2 to 3 days to complete
- Cost: 395 US$.
Underwater Navigator
- Description – How many divers do you see carrying a compass underwater these days? And to be honest when you have a guide leading you there seems little sense in having to even know how anymore. Not so! For sure there will come a time when you are well and truly lost and the compass is your only trustworthy point of reference in a rapidly fading sense of direction! The Underwater Navigator Specialty course puts you back in touch with how to use your compass and other natural navigational aids with confidence. You’ll practice navigating ever more complex patterns whilst maintaining good buddy contact and measuring the distances you’re travelling. It’s not exactly a walk in the park either. Between you, your dive buddy and the compass, you’ll have a lot of fun figuring it all out.
- Who may participate – Open Water Divers or higher may participate including all Junior Ratings.
- Number of dives: 3 adventure dives and takes between 1 and 2 days to complete
- Cost: 330 US$.
Night Diver
- Description – Just because the sun went down doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s time to pack away your dive gear. In fact many of our favourite marine life encounters have happened after sundown. This is a time when the sea takes on that that even more mysterious quality and you expectantly peel back the curtain of darkness with the beam from your dive torch in keen anticipation of what might be hiding there. Anyone who has ever done a night dive will tell you right away that, once you’ve braved the initial plunge, the colours that greet your dive light are much more vibrant than anything you recall having seen in the daytime. The Night Diver Specialty course gives you more insight into these phenomena and much more. You’ll be practicing some unique skills such as navigating at night, special dive procedures and how to signal each other with your torches. The course is fun, informative and laced with an edgy kind of excitement that you only get from venturing into the unknown. It’s also rather convenient for those night owl types who like to sleep throughout the day!
- Who may participate – Open Water Divers or higher may participate including Junior Ratings who are also 12 years or older.
- Number of dives: 3 adventure dives and takes between 2 and 3 nights to complete
- Cost: 330 US$.
Wreck Diver
- Description – This Specialty Course is very location dependant as there are not always appropriate shipwrecks merely lying around the sea floor at any given diving destination. Fortunately our Hulhumale dive centre is but a stone’s throw away from a fantastic shipwreck called the “Maldives Victory” which is perfect for teaching Wreck Diver Specialty courses. During theory and training you’ll learn about both the unique points of interest and potential hazards related to diving on wrecks as well as diving techniques specific to wreck diving. You’ll also be mapping a section of the wreck and evaluating it as a potential entry point for penetrating the wreck. Then comes the highlight of the course, we take you inside the shipwreck.... or rather you take us by laying a navigational line through the wreck using a diving reel. The whole experience is exciting and hugely satisfying which is why the Wreck Diver Specialty course is one of the most sought after specialties to have under your belt.
- Who may participate – Adventure Divers or higher may participate with the exception of Junior Ratings.
- Number of dives: 4 adventure dives and takes between 2 and 3 days to complete
- Cost: 395 US$.
Digital Underwater Photographer
- Description – Maybe you haven’t yet noticed but at Maafushi Dive we are rather quite keen on underwater photography! For some of us it has completely redefined why we love to dive and added a new dimension to scuba diving that is easy to be passionate about! The Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty course introduces you to the equipment basics you’ll need to take pictures underwater along with an emphasis on how to do this in a responsible manner without impacting on the fragile marine environment. We’ll teach you how the same photography principles used topside can be adapted to work in the underwater world and then we’ll take you to dive sites where you can experiment with these techniques yourself. A fair word of warning though, underwater photography is addictive and can lead to you investing heavily in your own equipment. Go for it! What could possibly be more worthwhile than capturing your latest diving adventures on digital camera and sharing them with all of the important people in your life?
- Who may participate – PADI Scuba Divers or higher including all junior ratings
- Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete
- Cost: 265 US$.
Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Description – Have you ever wondered why dive professionals and other experienced divers have such good buoyancy? Well at some stage they were in your shoes too, asking the same questions and seeking the same expert help that we now teach in the Peak Performance Buoyancy course. The truth is that it all boils down to balancing the various forces that act on your position underwater. These relate back to your specific body position, weight distribution, fin stroke technique, breathing control, and a variety of other personal habits which make you dive the way that you do. Led by your instructor, the course helps you to evaluate your own style and try out different techniques and equipment configurations to see what works for you. We prompt you to be more aware of your own buoyancy by putting you through an underwater obstacle course and various hovering skills that purposely challenge your ability to the limit. By the end of it you will have been introduced to helpful new concepts and hopefully made it your own personal goal to better understand your buoyancy on each and every dive.
- Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including all junior ratings.
- Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete.
- Cost: 265 US$.
Drift Diver
- Description – There are always going to be days in Scuba Diving where you have to deal with currents, sometimes even strong currents but they needn’t necessarily be a drag! Drift diving is the art of working with underwater currents and using their energy to take you further along on a dive site than you can possibly manage under your own steam. It requires special co-ordination a heightened awareness and good buddy contact to make the dive enjoyable. In the Maldives pretty much every dive is a “one way” dive and with so many channels between the islands, drift diving can often be the norm and not the exception. If this kind of diving represents unchartered territory for you then the Drift Diver Specialty course gives you a good grounding in the techniques required. By the end of it you should feel less like a reed in the wind and more like a bird on the wing.
- Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including junior ratings 12 years or older.
- Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete.
- Cost: 265 US$.
Underwater Naturalist
- Description –One of the first things that strikes you when diving in the Maldives is the sheer abundance of fish . Not just fish but a whole host of marine life critters that all have their place in this amazing underwater world. The Underwater Naturalist Specialty course broadens your understanding of how marine life is organised by science into various families and species. You also learn a bit more about how and why certain marine animals share special symbiotic relationships and then you’ll be having a go at finding and identifying some of the broader fish families and coral species on your dives. You even get to be an underwater artist by sketching a species of fish that you’re not familiar with and bringing the evidence back for proper identification. The Underwater Naturalist course helps you to appreciate the incredible diversity of what’s around you on every dive and to pay attention to the smaller animals too.
- Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including all junior ratings.
- Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete.
- Cost: 265 US$.

eLearning
Lets face it, you didn’t fly half way around the world just to sit in a classroom and listen to someone waffle on about scuba diving. You’ve come here to actually go scuba diving and the sooner that starts to happen the better!
Well it can! If you’re wanting to do a diving course anywhere in the Maldives there’s no need anymore to wait untill you get here to complete the theory portion of your training. In this day and age you can do almost everythign over the internet and getting started with your PADI diving certification is no exception. PADI has developed an eLearning portal to give student divers this convenient option of studying in the comfort of their own home and completing the course theory ahead of their vacation.
The portal supports all of the most popular PADI courses in English. Other language support is also available for at least the open Water Diver Course. For more information on what courses are supported and in which languages see the list below.
You’ll need a credit card to pay PADI directly for your eLearning access. This paymnet gives you lifetime access to an on-line version of your course manual so you don’t need to carry heavy books around with you on vacation either. You’ll also have access to a virtual classroom which systematically introduces you to the course manual content and periodically quizes you to test your understanding. For certain courses there is also a final exam to be taken at the end of the virtual classroom training. Your virtual classroom access is valid for a period of one year.
Throughout your theory training PADI will update us on your eLearning progress and once you complete the theory and finish the final exam we will recieve confirmation that you have done so. For your own peace of mind you can print an eRcord of your course results and bring it with you to show as proof of having completed all of the eLearning related to your course.

First Aid Courses - Child Page -
It might surprise you to know that all PADI diving instructors are also Emergency First Response Instructors? But it makes sense. With any kind of adventure sport there is always a potential risk of an accident happening or someone being injured. Even in diving related accidents the fundamental principles of emergency first aid still apply. That’s why we teach the EFR first aid and basic life support course in conjunction with the PADI Rescue diver course in order to better prepare our students.
But even if you are not a diver it’s still a good thing to know how to help someone in need of medical attention. The Emergency First Response course (EFR) teaches you how to evaluate emergency situations based on the same protocols that emergency medical services personal are trained in and how to respond to the best of your ability.
What’s involved?
The course is divided into two main sections:
Primary care – This covers emergency first aid procedures and how to assist an unresponsive patient or someone who is conscious but in need of emergency medical attention. You learn how to monitor a patient’s lifeline and provide them with basic life support until Medics arrive. Skills covered in this section include:
- Scene assessment
- Barrier use
- Primary assessment
- Rescue breathing
- CPR
- Serious Bleeding Management
- Shock Management
- Spinal Injury Management
As additional components to the course we can also teach the use of emergency oxygen units and automated external defibrillators. If these are available in your workplace then it is important for you to know how to use them correctly. Our training units let you practice using these apparatus on a training dummy in a simulated and safe manner.
Secondary care – In this section we look at the treatment of injuries or illnesses that are not immediately life threatening. You learn how to assess a patient for illness or injury based on what the patient tells you and what you can see or feel for yourself. Skills that are developed in this section include:
- Injury assessment
- Illness assessment
- Bandaging
- Splinting
Secondary care follows primary care as a priority and is something you initiate if emergency medical assistance takes longer to arrive at the scene or is immediately unavailable. The goal here is to assess the patient for other not so obvious conditions and to make the patient as comfortable as possible until medics can be summoned.
Who can participate?
There is no minimum age requirement or other prerequisite requirement for participation in the EFR course. If you want to learn how to help someone in a medical emergency situation then you are welcome to join.
WHY EFR?
EFR is a PADI affiliate and was developed not only to meet the prerequisite requirements of the PADI rescue diver course but also to be in line with the accepted industry standards for first aid and basic life support training. As such, the EFR certification is widely accepted by other industries as meeting their prerequisite requirements for professionals who are actively working or seeking employment. Industries where first aid training is generally an occupational requirement include:
- Airlines and aviation
- Schools or other educational centres
- Police and military
- Commercial diving
- Health and safety at work officers for any company.
- Shipping companies and other Maritime exploits
If you are operating such a company and industry guidelines require your staff to participate in a refresher first aid course then please contact us directly to get a competitive quotation. We have enough equipment and staff to teach large classes either at our dive centre facility or directly on location at your offices, whichever is most convenient for you.
If you are a professional and in need of a first aid refresher to maintain your active working status then please get in touch with us to schedule one at your earliest convenience.

Scuba's diving options specifically tailored towards dive clubs and groups you can afford it! We understand your needs and will help you to plan and organise your visit to this divers paradise.
Scuba diving has always been a bit special and held an almost magical quality in peoples imagination.
Diving in the Maldives started out as a pilgrimage for those adventurous diving fanatics in search of unchartered and above all un-dived territory. Back then it was all about roughing it in quaint beach huts with no air conditioning, salt water showers and tuna curry three times a day. But none of that mattered because the surroundings were breathtakingly beautiful and the diving was, and still is, absolutely amazing…..
….Fast forward to today and the simple life has been replaced with 5 star plus luxury resorts and spas all advertising the Maldives as the quintessential honeymoon retreat for the rich and famous. Prices climbed, the real dive fanatics established a fleet of safari boats and the cuisine improved dramatically.
With the exception of the high prices, these developments in tourism were all fine and well propelling tourism to the forefront of economic development within the country.
Undeniably the resorts are fabulously splendid and the present assortment of luxury Safaris are selling truly wonderful options to explore more of the Maldives in a single visit.
But what choice is there for your average bread winner or shoe string budget backpacker to realize their dream of diving the Maldives? Well thankfully there are possibilities and this section will be taking a brief look into all of them.
Mid Level Tourism in Maldives
Getting Here
These days there are may direct flights offered by a variety of airlines flying to the Maldives. Especially if you’re already travelling in and around South East Asia you can come here very cheaply from Thailand, Sri-Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, India and even China. There are also direct flights from Dubai, Doha, Germany, the UK and Switzerland so the Maldives aren’t nearly as remote as they might seem.
Although this concept is heralded as a very recent development to tourism in the Maldives, in actual fact it is merely a revival of the past. In an effort to encourage its local citizens to benefit more directly from tourism, the present government has empowered the locally inhabited islands to start up their own guest houses and to promote themselves as quasi eco tourism destinations.
Dive packages If you’re a keen diver and you aim to make scuba diving the focus of your stay in the Maldives then a dive package will help you to do just that. We’ll sort out your airport transfers, accommodation and diving requirements, all you need to do is arrive and dive!
At Maafushi Dive we offer two kinds of dive package options. One is for backpackers, individuals and couples who are looking for good diving without the resort price tag attached. The other is for larger groups (minimum numbers apply) such as overseas dive centres and dive clubs that wish to bring their members here to see the natural beauty of the Maldives without having to break the bank. In both cases we do the leg work for you so you can relax and rest assured that you and your people will be taken care of.
Read more about these diving options under the dive packages section. Go to dive packages>>>

Diving options for non certified divers @ Maafushi Dive
For non-certified divers we run a PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program. This program permits someone who has never dived before to try out scuba diving under the direct supervision of a PADI instructor. The DSD session includes a brief theoretical introduction to diving safety and equipment as well as a skill practice session in shallow water after which the participant actually goes on a real scuba dive.
What’s involved?
The formal bit - Once we’ve welcomed you at the dive centre we’ll ask you to fill in a Discover Scuba Diving registration form and try on some diving gear for proper fit. Thereafter your instructor will give you a briefing on how to dive safely as well as explain to you how your equipment works and what sort of skill you’ll be learning underwater.
Things start to get better - Soon we’ll be leaving the classroom behind us and heading out by boat to a shallow sandy area of the lagoon. Here in very shallow water we’ll help you to master a few basic skills that everyone participating in scuba diving should be comfortable with. Please try to focus on what your instructor is trying to show you and don’t be too distracted by all the fish!
This is what you’ve been looking for – Finally, after a short trip by boat to a nearby reef, you and your instructor enter the water to enjoy a real dive in the Maldives.
Standard is 2 students, 1 instructor at maximum, the dive time will be around 30-45 minutes. Max depth 12 meters.
This program is at scheduled time, from 13:45 - 16:30 everyday.
Price is $75/- per person, the rate includes, all course interactions, equipment, dive, tax. (Basically all that requires for this dive).
And to do a DSD you don't need to be a swimmer as BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) - the jacket will handle that with supervision of your instructor.

For more information on scuba diving courses please visit our PADI section of the website.
www.maafushidive.com
Day 1 – On your first day we cover the course paperwork and get into the theory of scuba diving.
Day 2 - It’s time to get wet!
Day 3 – We leave the confines of the lagoon behind us to find deeper water around one of the beautiful reefs in the Maldives.
Day 4 – On your final day we take you out on two more open water dives to complete the remaining course requirements.
So your PADI Open Water Diver course is well underway, and it’s almost time to head out to complete the open water component. But, you may be wondering, what does that entail? What are the four PADI Open Water dives? We’re going to look at what to expect from each dive, along with the skills you’ll need to perform to ensure you’re fully prepared for your first foray into open water diving.
Before we get to the breakdown of each dive, here’s a quick reminder of the components of the course, which culminate in the four open water dives:
Water Skills Assessment (aka the 200-meter swim/10-minute float)
Knowledge Development (commonly done as PADI e-Learning)
Confined Water Skills Practice
Open Water Skills Practice (4 dives)
Once you have proven your water skills, worked through the knowledge development and mastered your dive skills in the confined water, the final step is to head out to open water to put everything you’ve learned into action.
Open Water Practice
The PADI Open Water Diver course includes four open water dives which usually take place over at least two days. Each dive has been designed to give divers the opportunity to practice and hone their diving skills while increasing confidence and comfort in the water.
Each dive includes a number of instructor-assessed skills. Some skills need to be completed on a certain, specific dive, while other “dive-flexible skills” can be performed at any convenient time when you’re in or under the water.
Dive-Flexible Skills
During the four open water dives, you will be required to perform certain dive skills which will be assessed by your instructor.
These dive-flexible skills are assessed at the water’s surface and can be performed during dives 1, 2, 3 or 4:
- Cramp Removal Techniques on a Buddy and Yourself
- Tired Diver Tow (25 meters/yards)
- Straight Line Compass Swim (50 meters/yards)
- Snorkel/Regulator Exchange
- Remove and Replace Gear (Scuba Unit and Weight System)
- Inflatable Signal Tube Use (Can be done on the surface or, when using a Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB), underwater.)
- Emergency Weight Drop (If not already done on one of your confined water sessions)
These dive-flexible skills are assessed underwater and can be performed during dives 2, 3 or 4:
- Compass Navigation – Straight-Line Swim (Out and Back)
- Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent (CESA)
PADI Open Water Dives 1 and 2
PADI Open Water dives 1 and 2 are mainly about introducing new divers to open water and establishing in-water comfort. This is especially true for dive 1, before more advanced skills are introduced in dive 2. Each dive starts, as all future dives will, with assembling and putting on your scuba gear, performing a pre-dive safety check and assessing the weight you need to carry during the dive. It is also normal for time to be spent on correct techniques for entering and exiting the water, correcting buoyancy and equalizing.
The maximum depth for dives 1 and 2 is 12 meters/40 feet.
Open Water Dive 1:
As the first time divers are entering open water during the PADI Open Water course, this dive is often kept simple intentionally. Before entering the water, divers will:
- Put on scuba equipment
- Perform a pre-dive safety check
- Adjust weight (if necessary)
- Review hand signals
These steps will be present on all 4 open water dives.
Once in the water, you will perform a controlled descent, either using a descent line or by following a sloping bottom contour. After descending to a maximum of 12 meters/40 feet, you will complete a trim check, clear a partially flooded mask, and recover and clear your regulator as the underwater skills. You’ll also of course get a chance to explore the dive site with the instructor before ascending and finishing the dive.
Open Water Dive 2:
Surface preparation for open water dive 2 is similar to dive 1. However, divers will now also have to plan the dive and establish correct buoyancy at the surface. The start of dive 2 looks like this:
- Use a dive computer or recreational dive planner (RDP) to plan the dive
- Put on your scuba equipment
- Perform a pre-dive safety check
- Adjust weight (if necessary)
- Orally inflate your BCD while at the surface
Once in the water, you will use the five-point method to descend to a maximum of 12 meters/40 feet again using a control line or the sloping bottom contour. Once at depth, you will need to make yourself neutrally buoyant using your low pressure inflator. Then, it’s time to demonstrate the following dive 2-specific skills:
- Clear a fully flooded mask
- Recover and clear the regulator at depth
- Signal out of air and use an alternative air source with a buddy
- Ascend while using/donating an alternate air source
After completion, any remaining time will be spent exploring the dive site, staying aware of your air consumption and your buddy’s location, before you use the five-point method to ascend to the surface while maintaining buddy contact and performing a safety stop along the way.
PADI Open Water Dives 3 and 4
An increase in the maximum depth and the addition of more surface and in-water skills make open water dives 3 and 4 the ideal progression to grow your in-water capabilities. The PADI Open Water dive 3 and 4 skills will complete what is required to become certified as a PADI Open Water Diver. It’s also likely that, during these dives, you will have more time to explore the underwater world to further build your confidence and diving competency.
The maximum depth for open water dives 3 and 4 is 18 meters/60 feet.
Open Water Dive 3:
By dive 3, the dive preparation steps should look somewhat familiar:
- Use a dive computer or recreational dive planner (RDP) to plan the dive
- Put on your scuba equipment
- Perform a pre-dive safety check
- Adjust weight (if necessary)
After descending to a maximum of 18 meters/60 feet using the five-point method (with only visual references to assist the descent), you will be required to perform these dive 3-specific skills:
- Inflate your BCD orally to become neutrally buoyant and hover
- Clear a fully flooded mask
Once complete, you will explore the dive site, staying aware of your air consumption and your buddy’s location, before using the five-point method to ascend while maintaining contact with your buddy, performing a safety stop on the way up.
Open Water Dive 4:
PADI Open Water dive 4 skills are usually made up of any remaining dive-flexible skills which have not performed during the other 3 open water dives. By now, dive preparation and the entry procedure should be comfortably familiar:
- Use a dive computer or recreational dive planner (RDP) to plan the dive using the PADI Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate
- Put on your scuba equipment
- Perform a pre-dive safety check
- Adjust weight (if necessary)
Divers will then descend using the five-point method and without a reference this time. Once at depth, you don’t have any formal skills to practice, so you can concentrate on exploring the dive site while still under the watchful eye of your Instructor before using the five-point method to ascend to the surface while maintaining contact with your buddy.
And that’s it! The four open water dives are complete! You will now have the underwater experience and have performed the required dive skills to become certified as a PADI Open Water Diver. Thousands of dive centers, dive resorts and liveaboards around the world await!

* Deep Dive
* Underwater Navigation
Elective Dive Options
* Night Diving
* Wreck Diving
* Underwater Digital Photography
* Peak Performance Buoyancy
* Drift Diving
* Underwater Naturalist
For a full description on each of these diving activities please refer to our Specialty Courses section which explains each of them in more detail.
If you are already open Water Certified then you can earn the Advanced Open Water Diver rating within 2 days.
What’s involved?
* Day 1 – You’ll receive your Adventures in Diving participant manual and then discuss with your diving instructor exactly which Adventure Dives you would like to participate in.
* Day 2 – By this stage most of the theory should be finished and we’re looking at completing the remaining three course dives.
Get a head start!
* We highly recommend that participants complete the theory portion of the course online through the PADI eLearning portal. You can do all of the knowledge development for each adventure dive from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a laptop or PC, a comfortable chair and an endless supply of coffee. If you choose this option then please discuss with us specifically which Adventure Dives you wish to participate in before starting your eLearning. Feel free to contact us directly via email or use the contact form on our website to confirm the dives with us. For more information on eLearning, you can read our eLearning section of the website.
Who can participate?
* The minimum age for participants is 12 years. Participants under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or legal guardian who should be with the underage participant to sign the various course forms. Participants between 12 and 15 years of age will receive a PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver certification after satisfactorily completing the course. There is no maximum age limit.
* Participants must either be PADI Open Water Certified or carry an equivalent certification from another accredited diving organization or agency.
* Participants should be in good health.
* Please be advised that there is a 24 Hour no diving before flying policy in effect in the Maldives. It’s better to schedule any diving related activities early on in your travel plans to avoid conflict with this local law. We would hate to turn you away simply because you are flying the next day.
How Much?
* The cost of the PADI Adventure Diver Course is 375 US$ per person. If you have completed the eLearning option then we will give you a 50 US$ discount on the course rate. These are fixed rates and remain constant regardless of who you book through. Please DO NOT pay more than our published rates! Thank you.

SOUTH ARI ATOLL
Without a doubt, the Whale Shark hotspot in The Maldives is South Ari Atoll (also known as Alifu Dhaalu Atoll). Here, you can spot Whale Sharks all year round and the chances are high of seeing them, as the waters in this atoll are abundant in plankton. The Maldivian Government declared South Ari Atoll as a protected marine area in 2009, and certain restrictions are put into place to protect Whale Sharks, making this the best place to swim with them in their natural environment. Although sightings of Whale Sharks are guaranteed most days, there is a peak time of the year to see them here which is from August to November.
The best places to stay in South Ari Atoll to see Whale Sharks:
Dhigurah Island (Guesthouse Accommodation)
Sun Island Resort (Private Villa Accommodation)
Maamigili Island (Guesthouse Accommodation)

Maamigili, like Dhigurah, is the perfect choice for the traveller who wants to experience something unique and different to a luxury resort, and searches for more of a genuine connection with the culture and local living.
BAA ATOLL
Another fantastic place to spot Whale Sharks is in Baa Atoll. This atoll is famous for its UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Hanifaru Bay, and during the right season Baa Atoll is home to hundreds of Manta Rays as they feed on the masses of plankton in the ocean. Of course, the plankton also attracts Whale Sharks who are seen in Baa Atoll from May to November. The coral reef in Hanifaru Bay stretches a total of 1300 meters, and a specific section of the reef, approximately 600 meters long, is where whale sharks sightings are common.
During May to November, the South West Monsoon causes a massive build-up of plankton, drawing in hundreds of whale sharks and manta rays. Hanifaru Bay is the largest known Manta Ray feeding station on our planet! It is now a marine protected area where fishing, boating and scuba diving are restricted. Snorkelling is also controlled, with a limit of 5 boats and 80 visitors who are allowed to spend a maximum of 45 minutes in Hanifaru Bay. Specific rules also include swimming distance and photo restraints. Visitor tokens are required which can be obtained from the Hanifaru Visitor Center.
The best places to stay in Baa Atoll to see Whale Sharks:
Dharavandhoo Island
Royal Island Resort
DHARAVANDHOO LOCAL ISLAND
Another down to earth, beautiful island in The Maldives, Dharavandhoo provides an affordable getaway to paradise. Easily accessible by domestic flight from Malé Airport, the laidback and tropical Dharavandhoo Island is located in the heart of UNESCO's marine biosphere reserve, Hanifaru Bay. It takes only 5-minutes by boat to reach Hanifaru Bay from Dharavandhoo.
We recommend staying at the stunning hotel, Kiha Beach. You will experience the local side of The Maldives, an authentic, down to earth holiday with the best snorkelling and diving in the world! Check out our 6-night Manta Ray Trip here.

Royal Island resort has tours that can be booked at the resort and boats chartered for going out into the water to swim with Whale Sharks. Thanks to the reserve, the marine life here is abundant so you’ll encounter much more than just the biggest fish of the ocean!
Deep Diver
Description – In reality it’s very simple to descend even to deep depths, especially in a location like the Maldives where the water is warm and generally very clear.
Who may participate – Adventure Divers or higher may participate with the exception of Junior Ratings.
Number of dives: 4 adventure dives and takes between 2 to 3 days to complete
Cost: 395 US$.
Underwater Navigator
Description – How many divers do you see carrying a compass underwater these days?
Who may participate – Open Water Divers or higher may participate including all Junior Ratings.
Number of dives: 3 adventure dives and takes between 1 and 2 days to complete
Cost: 330 US$.
Night Diver
Description – Just because the sun went down doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s time to pack away your dive gear.
Who may participate – Open Water Divers or higher may participate including Junior Ratings who are also 12 years or older.
Number of dives: 3 adventure dives and takes between 2 and 3 nights to complete
Cost: 330 US$.
Wreck Diver
Description – This Specialty Course is very location dependant as there are not always appropriate shipwrecks merely lying around the sea floor at any given diving destination.
Who may participate – Adventure Divers or higher may participate with the exception of Junior Ratings.
Number of dives: 4 adventure dives and takes between 2 and 3 days to complete
Cost: 395 US$.
Digital Underwater Photographer
Description – Maybe you haven’t yet noticed but at Maafushi Dive we are rather quite keen on underwater photography!
Who may participate – PADI Scuba Divers or higher including all junior ratings
Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete
Cost: 265 US$.
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Description – Have you ever wondered why dive professionals and other experienced divers have such good buoyancy?
Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including all junior ratings.
Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete.
Cost: 265 US$.
Drift Diver
Description – There are always going to be days in Scuba Diving where you have to deal with currents, sometimes even strong currents but they needn’t necessarily be a drag!
Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including junior ratings 12 years or older.
Number of dives: 2 adventure dives and takes 1 day to complete.
Cost: 265 US$.
Underwater Naturalist
Description: One of the first things that strikes you when diving in the Maldives is the sheer abundance of fish .
Who may participate – PADI Open Water Divers or higher including all junior ratings.

From May to October, reef manta rays in Maldives are found across the eastern side of atolls and from November to April, they're sighted on the western side of atolls
Whether you're diving or snorkelling, manta rays can be spotted all around The Maldives as well as all year round, but there are some spots that are better than others, as well as some timings that are more optimal.
Manta rays migrate seasonally within the Maldives, following the bi-annual movement of microscopic animals called plankton. This is what mantas feed on in masses. The Maldives is an amazing destination for sightings of manta rays. To know where to find manta rays at any time in The Maldives, you will need to know a few things about the seasons and currents of the Indian Ocean.
As a recap, in the Maldives, there are two seasons - the rainy season, also known as the southwest monsoon which runs approximately from May to October. There is also the dry season, also known as the northeast monsoon which runs approximately from December and March. The transitional months are April and November between these two seasons/ monsoons.
Depending on the currents in the Indian Ocean, where there are strong upwellings and nutrient-rich deep waters - that's where you can analyse the areas with the most plankton. Thus, attracting the most manta rays.
In general, this means that from May to October it is more likely to see the manta rays on the eastern edges of the atolls and from December to March, it is more likely on the western outskirts of the atolls. Although there will never be a 100% guarantee for spotting manta rays, because after all they are in the wild, if you follow these guidelines you will definitely increase your chances!

How hot is it in The Maldives?
Throughout the length of the year, you will be greeted by consistent 30° degrees days in The Maldives. Make sure to pack light-weight clothing, sun cream and exchange those heels for some flip-flops. During the day, the temperature averages at around 28° degrees celsius and in the evening, it can drop to 26° degrees celsius - this is all year round!
Are there seasons in The Maldives?
Yes, there is a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. Along with these seasons, come the peak and low season for tourism in The Maldives. Therefore, most tourist facilities will charge higher prices for stays between November and April, especially during the festive season through to Easter. This is the busiest time to visit The Maldives simply because the weather is at its best, with sunshine and very little rain everyday.
DRY SEASON
November to April
Pros of travelling to The Maldives during dry season:
- Sunshine every day, very little rain
- Calm ocean, little waves and high ocean clarity (fabulous for snorkelling, diving and more!)
- Many international flight options as this is the peak tourism season (you might find some good flight deals due to high availability - if you book in advance.)
Cons of travelling to The Maldives during dry season:
- A definite surge in prices for tourist facility accommodation
- Due to peak season, more likely to have expensive international flights
- The calm ocean during this time means it is not the best time for surfing
This means that the cheapest time to visit The Maldives, is during low season (wet season) from May to October. Apart from the unfavourable weather conditions, there are benefits to travelling in The Maldives during wet season.
WET SEASON
May to October
Pros of travelling to the Maldives during wet season:
- The fascinating Manta Season begins iduring the wet season, increasing your chances of swimming with mantas and whale sharks in The Maldives. Although it is true that these marine animals can be spotted all year round.
- Surfing season is better, you will find good swells and favourable winds.
- The wind is great for certain water-sports, windsurfing, kitesurfing etc.
- There will still be plenty of sunshine during wet season, and it will not rain every day.
- International flights will be cheaper to The Maldives during the wet season.
Dive Sites
Maafushi offers many dive sites with varying conditions perfect for dive enthusiasts with diverse skill sets. Embark on an exciting adventure to discover enthralling channel dives to picturesque underwater nature landscapes that will leave you in awe. Most sites are brimming with exotic variety of species from sizable schools of fish, big pelagic fish, plenty of soft corals, overhangs and caves as well as one very good wreck.
The Three Types of Dive Sites in the Maldives
The Channels or Kandu: These are channels that connect the interior of the atolls to the ocean. It is common to experience strong current in these regions where the water flows in or leaves the atolls, making it perfect for drift dives. Kandus are a treat for the experienced divers. The nutrient-rich waters attracts grey sharks, eagle rays, barracudas and jack fish.
Thila & Giri: These multicoloured pinnacles consisting of soft corals and sea fans are completely submerged underwater. The current tends to be strong in these regions. Fish also tend to aggregate in this region.
Giris pinnacles are similar to Thilas, except these tend to extend above the water surface and maybe exposed during low tides. The current in these locations are not as strong, making them great for novice divers as well as for night dives.
The Reefs or Faru: This is the interlude between the lagoon and ocean. These reefs extend above the surface in circular shape and can expect some strong currents.
Dive Sites
Kandooma Thila
Kandooma thila is considered one of the best dive sites in north Malé with overhangs and vibrant soft coral. This beautiful pinnacle is located North of Kandooma island, with its top reef at 12 meters descending to around 40 meters. The dive site is accessible throughout the year but recommended for divers with experience. During incoming currents, schools of fish, grey reef sharks, whitetip sharks, green turtles can be found between the thila and the ocean. During outgoing currents, most sharks can be located at the cleaning station at the northeast pinnacle at about 30 meters deep.
