First of all, to get to Male from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, take a ferry or speedboat from the Airport Ferry Terminal to Male. The ferry terminal is located close to the Domestic Terminal, which is a short walk to the right of the International Terminal (if you’re facing the sea). Ferries take 10 minutes and cost $1; express speedboats take 4 minutes and cost $2.
Getting to the Ferry:
When you disembark in Male take a taxi from the ferry terminal or flag one down in the street and ask them to take you to Jetty 1 or the ‘Maafushi ferry’ in order to save yourself a sweaty walk! (The taxi ride takes around 10 minutes). A taxi ride to any destination in Male costs just 25Rf ($2) although there is an additional charge of 5Rf for luggage or multiple stops en route.
Getting from Male to Maafushi Island:
There is a ferry service which departs daily from Jetty 1 in Male at 2.30PM (except Fridays). Tickets cost just $2 each way and the journey takes 90 minutes.
The public ferries do not have dining facilities so take food and water with you if you think you’ll need it. During the spectacular 90-minute journey to the tropical island of Maafushi you can sit in the shade inside or go up onto the roof to admire the view.
Staying nearby to Maafushi Island:
Maafushi is also just a stone’s throw away from two other inhabited islands with guesthouses on them, known as Guraidhoo and Gulhi. If you’re staying on either of these islands and want to visit Maafushi Dive, all 3 islands are connected via the public ferry service or we’d be happy to arrange a private transfer for you.
If you choose to continue staying in Guraidhoo or Gulhi, you can come to Maafushi each day to do your PADI Open Water course. Alternatively, you may want to go island-hopping through the quiet communities of Guraidhoo or Gulhi after you’ve finished exploring Maafushi. Each island has its own distinctive atmosphere and appearance to be savoured.
Getting back to Male:
Ferries depart for Male from Maafushi at 7.30AM daily (except Fridays). Alternatively, we can arrange private speedboat transfers for guests which usually cost around $150 each for a group of 5 or $200 each for a group of 10.
